Murray Cod caught by George William Newbound, not sure of the year but I think one of you will know all the details. I've contacted Fisheries Victoria and they have no record of this big catch nor know anything about the head being on display at their head office in Victoria. The first photos shows the Fisheries inspector doing his job and then the second one has George on the right and the front of Ted and Alice Newbounds FJ Holden according to their son Mike in Adelaide. There seems to be a little bit of a mystery around this fish! Was it caught in South Australia or Victoria? Out of season maybe?
UPDATE 2023 - Mike Newbound on The Newbounds of the World Facebook page
The mystery of the whereabouts of George Newbound's monster Murray Cod is how solved! I have in my possession a letter written by the member of Parliament the Honorable G. A. Bywaters dated 21st of October 1964 stating the Dept. of Fisheries Victoria Chief Inspector had confiscated the fish and that a caste was made of it and it is located in their office. The fish weighed 140lb.
UPDATE 2014 - Between Mike and I we have managed to get the letter onto our blog. Finally evidence that the Murray Cod exsisted.
It seems the Newbound's were great freshwater fishermen, here is another great catch.
