An old identity of Barnawartha, Chiltern and Rutherglen, Mr Roderick Newbound, died on Friday at the Albury Hospital, after a few days’ illness. Mr Newbound, who was 78 years of age, was born on the Wodonga Flats and went to Barnawartha with his parents when two years of age. He worked as a laboring boy on the construction of the N E Railway, and assisted in the building of the iron bridge spanning the Indigo Creek. Subsequently he delved in the mines around Chiltern and Rutherglen, but for 70 years on and off he resided at Barnawartha. He leaves a widow and family of eight sons (Alex, Roger, George, John, William, Thomas, Arthur and Albert) and two daughters (Mary and Jessie). Interment took place at the Barnawartha cemetery on Sunday, the Rev A R May (CofE) conducting the graveside services.

After a long illness, Mrs Mary Ann Newbound, wife of the late Roger Irwin Newbound, died at her daughter’s (Mrs Morrison) home, Longwood, on Friday, October 2. Deceased, who was 84 was to have celebrated her 85th birthday three days later. Before her marriage, she was Miss Mary Ann Johnson, and born in Rutherglen, moving to Barnawartha with her husband, and residing there for very many years. She became very well known and popular for her charity and human kindness. Her husband predeceased her sixteen years ago, the marriage resulting in the birth of eleven children, of which two are dead. Left to mourn their great loss are Roger, George, John, William, Thomas, Arthur, Mary (Mrs Morrison), Jessie (Mrs Brown), and Albert. Alex and a John predeceased her. A service was conducted at the church by Monsignor Lawless before proceeding to the Barnawartha cemetery where burial took place on Saturday, Monsignor Lawless reading the burial service. The casket was carried by sons Rod, Jack, Bert, Tom and Mick and grandson Ray, while the pall-bearers were grandsons.
