Two old Barnie identities

Mary Ann Ohlin married Irvin Roger Newbound at Rutherglen in 1889.

They had 11 children
Alexander Joseph b1890
John Thomas b1892 d1892
Roger Irvine b1893 (Rod)
George William b1895
John Thomas b1898
William b1900 (Bailey or Bill)
Thomas James b1903 (Tom)
Arthur Belmour b1906 (Mick)
Mary Florence b1908
Jessie Margaret b1911
Albert Ernest b1913 (Bert)

This photo was taken in the early 1950's, their home is no longer standing, a few went to look at the site on the Sunday morning after our gathering.  I'm sure Mary Ann spent many hours under that clothesline.

Roger was a bit of a  colourful character around the area apparently, I found these items in old newspapers.  I did think the crimes may have been his fathers, not so, dear dad the convict passed away in 1892.

Roderick Newbound, who was fined at the Rutherglen Court, 25 pound for sly grog selling. Has received a refund of 24 pound.

This photo must have been taken not too long before he passed away in 1937, he appears to be riddled with arthritis.

UPDATE from Jenny Newbound - 2011 Nine Newbounds trekked in long grass to Grandma's house site in Barnawartha. Alan showed the way and most of us souvenired a brick from the old kitchen fireplace... Memories are forever.

Three generations of Newbound's

I have to thank Gavin Newbound for all the photos from the Barnawartha gathering. He is yet to photograph his own family and that of his sister Colleen, he neglected them on the day!!  I had good intentions to take lots of photos but I seem to have spent way too much time chatting!   Here are three photos from Gavin's family tree.

Siblings Ian, Frank (Gavin and Colleen's dad passed away in 2005) and Elsie Newbound at the Shepparton reunion in 1999

Sister and Brother

Now we have the baby of the family Elsie Newbound from Kyneton, VIC and her one of her brothers, Ian and then his wife Pat from Castlemain, VIC.  I have a great photo from the Shepparton reunion in 1999 of the four siblings together, will dig that out too.  Not sure, need to get that contact list happening.  What a great day it was,  I hope you all enjoy our blog and please let me know if anything is incorrect or if I have offended anyone at all.  More soon.

The Morrison's of Longwood

Mary Morrison (nee Newbound) and John Morrison had a large family and four of them attended the gathering, they are; Brian, Nola, Maureen (a twin) and Anne, another family who look alike.

Sister and Brother

Here we have Shirly and her brother Ron with his wife Stella, they are siblings of Leo Newbound, remember what I said about family resemblance!  Shirley brought along her family tree album she had made for the 1999 Shepparton reunion, it's a work of art, she almost has a photo of every Newbound on the tree, wish I could share it's wonder with you.  Did anyone photograph the album?

Father and Son

Here we have Leo Newbound and his son Warren. Leo turned 80 in October and he's still working a couple of horses every morning, see work keeps you young.  Warren was a farrier and now makes boots for horses, he's based in Shepparton, so if you know a horse who needs a flash pair of boots give Warren a call.  There are stacks of twins in the Newbound family and Warren has a set himself.  I think I'll have to write a post about all the twins I've found so far, our convict rellie even had twin siblings, so that twin gene started a few generations ago.

An Ohlin

Lloyd, what would we do without him, he was the one who got the gathering happening, he couldn't muster any other Ohlin's but he sure did get the Newbound's stirred up.  He organised the great venue, suggested accommodation options, organised the mowing of the grass at the cemetery and I presume he also ordered the birthday cake.  Thank you Lloyd from all of us, it was a great day.We don't have a photo of he lovely wife Bernadette but she was there too.

Sisters

This is me Lisa Ashton (nee Newbound) and my little sister Donna Carmichael (nee Newbound), we are the only children of Thomas (Tom) Newbound (twin) who passed away in 2000 and Berris Newbound (Draper).  Donna attended the Shepparton reunion in 1999 with her family, mum and dad also attended.  This is my first Newbound gathering other that the Barnawartha Centenary held in 1975 where Donna and I wore matching long dresses and everyone confused us, as they still do!  Donna is about 5 inches taller than me!

The Brown family

This is Nancy Brown (nee Newbound) and one of her two sons, Stephen and his wife Loris.  I called in to visit Nancy when I went on a family history road trip last year, she is a real character who has fabulous memories of growing up in Barnawartha and spending time with Grandma (Mary Newbound).  Nancy has an ever increasing family, she has 2 sons, 7 grandkids and I have 6 great grandkids listed but she assures me that needs updating!  Will write to Nancy and get a full update.

Another cousin

Des's sister Suzanne and her youngest son Phillip (what a great 'fro) who attended both lunch and dinner, some of us didn't know about the lunch time start and missed catching up with a few of the family.  Did anyone take any photos at lunch?

My cousin

A few of us stayed in Wodonga with this wonderful couple, my cousin Des and his grogeous wife Lyn.  Des is the son of Eileen Parkin (nee Newbound) who sadly passed away in 2005, she grew up in Barnawartha.  Des allowed me to scan a whole bunch of family photos, I'll share those with you too.  The amazing thing about the gathering was looking into the faces of so many Newbound's I had never met and you can see the family resemblance so clearly.

Four Melbourne Newbounds

Bert (Hinky) Newbound (twin) and his lovely wife Olive travelled from Melbourne, VIC with one of their daughters, Jane and their niece Gail Antonie (nee Newbound, daughter of Lance Ivan Newbound) to help Clarrie celebrate his big day.  I loved finally meeting Jane who was one of the organisers of this gathering.  We hope to collect a contact list of all the Newbounds so when the next gathering comes up in about 2 years (suggested at the gathering) that we can contact everyone.  Whitepages lists 53 Newbounds but we know there are many more descendants of our infamous Roger John Newbound who arrived in the colony in early 1837 courtesy of the British penal system.  More about him later!

Alan Newbound and his wife Jenny also attended Clarrie's birthday gathering.  Alan has himself celebrated his 75th birthday on the 12th November.  They are a very fit couple, still playing competitive tennis very regularly.  Jenny is the artist among our family she has updated her website very recently and I'm sure she would love you to visit it here.

Happy Birthday Clarrie

Clarence Newbound brought a crowd of Newbounds together to celebrate his 90th birthday at The Star Hotel in Barnawartha, VIC on Saturday the 5th November, 2011. Here he is after making a birthday wish with his daughter Carolyn, they had travelled over from Adelaide, SA. Clarrie's cousin Pat also made the trip over to the east with them.

A little boy in his birthday suit.  Clarrie won a baby competition in Barnawartha in 1921.
